About Me

Who is This Nicolas Nguyen?

I have been gaming for almost forever, but as an artist, I have only been drawing for a measly 15 years. I draw to create. Create things out of nothing, and give life and meaning to this creation so that many others may enjoy and relate to this life I created. That is the ultimate goal for many artists out there, myself included. But unlike many people, I am not tied down by the possibilities of this reality, or do I seek the happy ending we all desire. Instead, I crave for the unexplored possibilities and the new reality that can be forge from the creative mind.

I usually express my art through either digitally when I create video games, or through the classic means of pen and pencil. Both medium I generally focus on how to convey my stories or character and how to utilize the medium to its fullest. Most time, I would reenact the character, pretending to be them, to experience and to gain first-hand experience what the character is like. This allows me to have a deeper understanding what my characters is and helps further develop/plan my story for that character. To save time, I draw the fundamentals of the character first, just having the basic shapes of the character, using pencil, then draw the details and final image using pen. This technique was often used in the early 2000 for manga artist to quickly draw their rough story boards in pencil and finalize the same story board with ink, allowing them to reach their due date and post out 20-30 pages of manga chapters per week/month.

“On my business card, I am a cooperate president. In my mind, I am a game developer. But in my heart, I am a gamer” quoted by Satoru Iwata of Nintendo. This very quote is something I remember and remind to myself, allowing me to truly love what I do. It is true that this field does have many challenges, such as writers block, spaghetti coding, or struggling to draw what you want. But knowing that these obstacles will not only be fun to overcome, but the end result could be fun for others is always worth tackling. These obstacles allow me to learn from my mistakes, analyze the situation, and think outside the box, while sharping my skills in those fields.
